Wordpress to Git for SVN

I have a wordpress and dev environment hosted online. I also have a github account. I would like to create a repo of the wordpress website on repo so we can track website changes. I would also need someone to explain this process to me and going forward how we would test and deploy changes. SSH copying and moving files is an extensive process which often does not let me keep track of the files.
