How to use VM software

Hi, I have dell inspiron laptop in which i have installed windows 2003 software. I need to also install windows XP on the same machine. However when i insert the windows xp cd to install as a second OS, the system disables the windows xp installation option in the cd autorun screen. This means i cant install xp on windows 2003. I also tried to boot up an external hard disk installed with XP software thru USB booting sequence but the screen turn blue and throwing serious errors. hence i want to use a VM software to achieve the same. I need proper steps to access the windows xp software installed in an external hard disk thru the VM software. However I do not want to reinstall my OS because in that case i have resintall all my other applications which is tedious.
