Hello! I am currently a full time UNIX Engineer working with RHEL, CentOS & Solaris hosts. I currently support upwards of 5000 servers as part of a senior support team ensuring compliance, monitoring and performance levels are achieved on a consistent basis. I would like to propose the following work; 1. Review current system setup - taking a look at the purpose of your hosts and determining whether or not they are running at an optimal level. Initially looking at the high level setup, a basic overview of the hosts and then drilling further into the CPU & Memory usage on the hosts using a combination of commands such as mpstat, iostat, and if relevant, numactl based commands. 2. Attempt to pinpoint the cause of the mentioned sporadic error currently impacting one of the hosts. It is difficult to say how this will be done without knowing the nature of the error or the issues it is causing however I would suggest it likely we can set up basic OS monitoring on the host in conjunction with the previous step which will allow us to debug the error should it occur again. 3. Discuss monitoring options - this will likely be dependent on how much you are looking to spend on creating a monitoring solution. It is entirely possible however to put together a series of shell scripts that can monitor your hosts and alert staff via mail to issues. Please let me know if you'd like any further information.
