We propose using crystal based transmitters at 355MHz, which are widely available for around $5. The transmitter is connected to the PC with the Atmega32u2 USB microcontroller. On the receiver side, we use a E4000 RF decoder to extract the base band signals and process them with a PIC24 microcontroller, which can optionally be connected to an Android phone. The receiver can be build for around $10. The RF decoder can process upto 1.5GHz, so we can use any low end ISM band. 355MHz is commonly used for car and garage remote controllers. They are very low cost.
