For your project, I will create a Java frontend/backend pair which will assess device status over ICMP, TCP, and UDP, configurable per-device. As per the limitations of Java, the backend will require administrative privileges to be able to send ICMP requests, unless it is made in a platform-dependent way, which would rely on wrapping the ping command. Backend features: -Ping devices over ICMP -Make TCP and UDP connections to specific ports/services -Test for expected responses from TCP connections -Add/remove users (username and/or SMS) to receive notifications from all or specific devices -Send short alerts to appropriate Email/SMS accounts when devices experience issues Frontend features: -Show devices on an imported image of a floorplan -Highlight problem devices for immediate attention -Provide information about what service(s) are down on a specific device Important note: my software would assume all devices are accessible through an IPv4 or IPv6 addresses or routable name. My program will not implement any proprietary monitoring for specific hardware; so any devices that are to be monitored must be normally reachable from the machine hosting the backend. This software will take six days to create, and so to meet your May 27th deadline I would need to start working sometime tomorrow.
