A story needs characters that are well-rounded. They should not follow the fairy tale pattern of characters who are wholly good or absolutely wicked. Make them come to life by allowing the readers a glimpse of their thoughts, their motivations, their inclinations. The development of your characters will guide you to the making of your plot as it is their story you are going to tell and through their viewpoint that the story unfolds. Never attempt to contrive a situation just because you want it to happen.
