An algorithm needs to be created for generating support structures for Fused Deposition Modelling. The support structures are truss-based inspired by truss structures in the construction industry. They consist of pillars connected with cross-links that provide additional support to the overhangs of the part to be built. The software needs to identify overhangs and place the model in optimum orientation. The angle of the model surface needs to be calculated with reference to the build plate. If the angle is over a specified limit (45), it needs to be considered as an overhang. The software then needs to generate supports efficiently.
