Bullet proof method to detect if the sound card / microphone is working correctly. (VB.net 2k3)

I need a button in a form, that will detect if the sound card is installed and functioning correctly. This bid is in reference to a project that will utilize the microphone to record a sound file. (WAV) The code below works, but not consistantly. From one PC to another, the exception msgnbox will launch.. Even when the sound card / microphone are working correctly. Thank you.
