Hi, I work with Wordpress at my day job. I would like to help you solve this theme problem. At work I sometimes see similar problems with other clients' themes. Wordpress has changed a lot since that theme was released, especially with the 4.0 update. I am not surprised that the developer ran off. Lots of them have decided that the changes are too much to keep up with and have stopped being independent theme developers. For this project, first I would check out what kind of error messages you are getting and see what exactly doesn't work. Then I'd go through each file in the theme and check functions against the Codex to see if any of them have been deprecated. After a few rounds of this and maybe a little more PHP you should be good to go!
