The BACHELORETTE is returning to ABC this summer. The 4th version of this occasional spin-off from The BACHELOR franchise features DeAnna Pappas, who, along with Jenni Croft, was dumped by Texas bar owner Brad Womack in the finale of The BACHELOR 11. Series premier is March 17/08
No doubt the 26 year old real estate agent from Neunan, Georgia, has a lot of sympathy going for her after being told no thanks on national TV - and told no thanks just when the audience figured she'd won. Now she'll have 25 bachelors fighting for her attention as a consolation prize, and hordes of scorned women rooting for her.
But will she find her true love?
Out of the 13 relationships spawned to date by the franchise, only one - Trisha and Ryan from the very first BACHELORETTE, are still a couple. If that weren't enough to make one cynical about the whole find-true-love-on-a-dating-show thing, MTV seems to have created a whole sub-genre, the serial dater show. On the The FLAVOR OF LOVE we get to watch poor Favor Flav giving it the old college try for a third time. On the spin off, I LOVE NEW YORK, NY has said she's finally found her man after 3 tries (we'll see). And A SHOT OF LOVE; well, that's a story in itself.
On MTV's New Year's Eve show, co-host Tila Tequila announced that she and her true love from A SHOT AT LOVE, a reality competition series where a co-ed group of singles competed for the heart of fluently bi-sexual Ms Tequila, had broken up. In fact, Reality Blurred reported that Bobby Banhart (hereinafter referred to as "the poor guy from season 1") confirmed he and Ms Tequila did have "a significant pre-New Year's conversation. "I talked to her two days before New Year's, and we talked on the phone a little bit. I just didn't see myself in any of the plans she had," he said."
The poor guy from season 1 never stood a chance (or read the trades or searched the net) - season 2 nationwide open casting calls for "eligible, alluring, outrageous, and adventurous men and women to go head-to-head for a chance to win the heart of our bi-sexual bachelorette," were held in November.
Will DeAnna find true love on The Bachelorette 4? For the sake of dating shows everywhere, one hopes so. The genre needs it.
