Fix Google Search capability in Joomla 2.5

A given Joomla 2.5 website was migrated to a new host. Somewhere in the process, the Google CSE search feature stopped working on both of them. The reason why this happened is unknown and it would be nice if you could find it.
At the moment the website resides on two hosts, which are bound to two different subdomains. Both versions display a search box that doesn't do anything. This needs to be fixed.
The new search feature will be connected to the free version of a Custom Search Engine service of a given Google account. I will provide the credentials to this account.
To begin with, you will need to fix the old version of the site and tell me how you did it. Once that works, I will attempt to do the same on the new version.
