Engineering ethics case study !! -- 2

For the purpose of this project, every group of students (who have already been formed for the first

term project) will have to select an engineering ethical case from any country in the Arab world and

analyze this case in the light of all the materials learned in this course. At minimum, students should

cover the following points in their reports:

1. Provide a brief description of the case with identifying all relevant facts and consequences.

Students should also include a copy of the source where they have obtained the case from (a

newspaper, a magazine, a book on engineering ethics, a website for an engineering society …

etc.). The source should be reliable, which means that students should not use sources that are

not peer-reviewed such as Facebook pages, Twitter, Social Forum websites, and similar

personal sources.

2. Discuss the ethics code applied in the country where the case took place (a copy of the code

should be provided in the submitted report). If no ethics code exists in that country, the

students should discuss if there are any plans to enforce a proposed code in that country and

they have present and discuss the proposed code. If no code is proposed yet for that country,

students should recommend a draft for a proposed ethics code for that country based on the

NSPE ethics code as well as all regional and societal conditions of that country. Students should

clearly identify any recommended differences between the proposed ethics code and the NSPE

ethics code and justify those differences in light of the regional societal conditions of that

country. A complete draft of the proposed code should be provided in the submitted report

along with a comparison table between the proposed code and the NSPE code.

3. Analyze the case in light of both the NSPE ethics code as well as the current (or proposed)

ethics code in the country where the case took place.

4. Analyze the case again using both utilitarian approach and respect-for-persons approach and

identify the difference between the two approaches as well as between this analysis (using the

utilitarian approach and respect-for-persons approach) and the above analysis (using the codes

of ethics)..
