Tracking an object via bar code

Hello,
I have a business where objects are passed in several departments. I would like to be able to assign a bar code to each object and be able to know at a given time in which department is the object. So each department would have to scan the bar code when the object leaves their department. Does somebody have an idea how to do this? We are a small operation and can't afford expensive software if such solutions exist commercially

It is better if you use QR-Code method instead of Barcode. Using QR-Code you could insert more information within the label such as department name, object ID, etc together. So, when you scan the label it would display Lebih banyak
