We are a non-profit initiative looking for immediate PAID assistance to build a website similar to kickstarter.com.
Book piracy is a widespread problem in Vietnam very seriously hurting publishers' book sales. Translated books often sell fewer than 1000 copies in all editions, a shame for a country of nearly 90 million people. Because of poor sales, publishers cannot pay translators a sustainable rate; for example a translator makes $800 to translate a 450 page book from English to Vietnamese. As a result, translation quality also suffers. It was recently pointed out that the Vietnamese translation of Houellebecq's The Map and the Territory had over 3000 (three thousand) mistakes and errors.
We plan to tackle this problem at its root. We believe that translators need better pay to produce quality translations. We also believe that the best way to spread knowledge is to give books to people for free. We combine these two ideas into [login to view URL] - a website based on the crowd-funding concept. We gather donations from donors all over the world and finance book translation projects in Vietnam at the acceptable rate of $5-$10/500 words. A good translator can easily translate up to 4000 words per day, or a monthly income of $1200 - $2400 - very high by the local standard. With that we hope to attract the best translators to produce high quality translations. We plan to produce the final product only in ebook form and make it available freely for download.
