E-Commerce Opencart Category Mod - Alternate Category Routes

I need a modification to our Opencart 1.5.1.3 installation that allows categories to be redirected to another category and subsequent categories. Candidates should be familiar with Opencart or at the very least MVC php.

I imagine there being an alternate route option on the category page in admin where we can pick which category it points to, but also allow seamless transition on the front end.

For example:

Make1 > 1991 > Model1 > Cable1

Make1 > 1991 > Model1 > Engine1

Make1 > 1992 > Model1 > Cable2

Make1 > 1992 > Model1 > Engine1

Make1 > 1993 > Model1 > Cable3

Make1 > 1993 > Model1 > Engine1

All these models share the same engine (and subsequent engine sub categories) but due to Opencart's design, we have to duplicate all the categories underneath every time. This mod would need to allow us to create a category structure for the shared engine, and then point the engine category underneath each model that shares that engine to that main category line. Since each model has different cables, we cannot just make an all inclusive 1991-1993 category since they won't share all sub-categories, just certain ones.

When a customer clicks on the Engine1 category, either in the 91, 92, or 93 category line, they should all go to the same Engine1 page. So instead, the above would look like:

Engine1 > Subcat1

Make1 > 1991 > Model1 > Cable1

Make1 > 1991 > Model1 > Engine1(points to Engine1 Parent Category)

Make1 > 1992 > Model1 > Cable2

Make1 > 1992 > Model1 > Engine1(points to Engine1 Parent Category)

Make1 > 1993 > Model1 > Cable3

Make1 > 1993 > Model1 > Engine1(points to Engine1 Parent Category)
