Hi!
I’m Will, a recent graduate of Parsons School of Design here in New York City. I’d love to hear more about your cabin project! I have experience in procurement of fixtures, furniture and equipment for both luxury projects and projects with more conservative budgets. I’ve gained invaluable knowledge working for two different designers over the last year and a half and I’m ready to start branching out on some smaller projects on my own.
My strength lies in my ability to think holistically. As a designer it’s my job to help you find your aesthetic, and it’s also to catch things that might normally be missed by someone who isn't purchasing furniture, fixtures & finishes on a regular basis.
In selecting light fixtures, for example: there are plenty of products that might look great online but don't provide adequate diffusion of light. It’s a small detail, but light fixtures that feature exposed bulbs can be uncomfortable to live around because they shine directly into our eyes.
Whether it’s lighting, kitchen cabinets or faucets - I pride myself on thinking a few steps ahead to save everybody time and money. It feels good to get it right on the first try!
Speaking in terms of representation, a key part of the design process is creating renderings. Another integral part of the process is to then select the right product for the job. Here are just a few of the considerations I have for this project:
- Cost and lead time
- Energy efficiency and noise level of appliances
- Diffusion and color temperature of light (in this case under cabinet lights and pendant lights if we do them over the island)
- For appliances: electrical connections to outlets and how those may impact aesthetics
- Aesthetics, atmosphere and a feeling of cohesion throughout space
- Water permeability & thermal comfort of finishes, in this case flooring
- If you’d like to prioritize sustainability I’ll source wood products with FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) Certification
- The health of my clients and their loved ones is a priority to me - I consider the VOC level of sealants, coatings, paint, and anything else that could have an impact on users’ health long term.
No single factor is more important than the other - what I love about my job is the balancing of these factors to create a space for my client that’s comfortable, beautiful and functional.
Thanks for taking a quick look into my process with me. If you'd like to see my previous work you can find it at [login to view URL]. The site is currently undergoing changes and will be available for viewing today at 11:59PM Eastern.
Warmly,
Will Severance
