A lead-zinc mine extracts ore from an underground massive sulphide deposit and produces zink (Zn) and lead (Pb) concentrates. The objective is to investigate the extraction of a series of ore panels, with each of you studying a single panel, as assigned in the Excel workbook. Zink and lead grades are estimated at the centroids of 5x5x4 m blocks in each panel.
a) Create charts showing the spatial distribution of the Pb and Zn block grades using the Excel VLOOKUP function.
b) Determine the first four moments of the block grade distributions of Pb and Zn.
c) Discuss the shape of the Pb and Zn block distributions by comparing these to the shape of the Gaussian distribution.
d) Discuss whether the Pb distribution could be described by a lognormal distribution.
e) Discuss the correlation between Zn and Pb block grades in the context of mining.
f) Determine the equivalent zinc grade for each block in the panel. State any assumptions made.
g) Compare the economic potential of two extraction sequences:
i) direction: north-to-south, then west-to-east
ii) direction: west-to-east, then north-to-south
with both sequences starting from the minimum Eastings and Northings coordinates. State all assumptions made and describe the procedure.
h) Create a chart of equivalent zink block grades as a function of time (proportional to the block ranking in the sequence)
i) Develop a flowsheet for producing lead and zink concentrates using a conventional grinding/flotation/dewatering process.
j) Discuss the variability of ore feed to the plant and what effect this may have on the recovery of lead and zinc in the plant.
k) Investigate whether domaining of panel blocks can help to optimise the quality of the feed to the plant.
