Switch Python app running on Google App Engine from OpenID 2 to OpenID Connect

We are currently running a modified install of Kahnacadamy (python) which uses OpenID 2 to authenticate our users.
Google deprecated OpenID2 and therefore we need to switch to another type of authentication (Google recommends OpenID Connect).
We have a test server available and have complete control over the sourcecode and authservers should we need to adjust anything.
