3DS Max Script to mark each vertex in a mesh

I have a mesh, perhaps more than one, which are all attached to a skeleton. Basically this is a character, perhaps with attachments, that is rigged to a skeleton. The mesh may or may not have morph targets. I need a script that visits all vertices in that scene and marks each vertex with a unique value. Preferably this means giving each vertex a unique colour, except the colours white and black. There might be other ways to mark vertices that I am not aware of (I'm a programmer not graphic artist), but the marked feature must be common enough to be exported by common exporters. Specifically in my case this is the OgreMax exporter. The reason for this operation is that I want a unique way of identifying each vertex when I export the basic mesh and then later meshes in various morphed forms. Currently I rely on the fact that the exporter will always export the vertices in the same order but I don't want to rely on this rather undefined behaviour.
