A writer in the Asia-Pacific area would be most beneficial for this project. Development of a needs assessment in Non Communicable Diseases in Asia-Pacific is requested. This document will be used to facilitate a discussion among physicians leading to a consensus statement on the role of family physicians from Asia Pacific countries in managing patients with Non Communicable Diseases. This resulting work will be aligned with efforts from the World Health Organization and WONCA. Review of current literature, guidelines and best practices in the following countries should be included and referenced. • Indonesia • Malaysia • Philippines • Singapore • Taiwan • China • Thailand • New Zealand • Australia Identification of common approaches would be helpful. A document for review is requested by November 23, 2019. The following text may serve as background: Noncommunicable diseases (NCD) are responsible for 73 percent of deaths in Asia Pacific countries and 89 percent of deaths in New Zealand and Australia in 2016. Cardiovascular diseases, cancer, chronic respiratory diseases, and diabetes account for most of these deaths. Combating NCD requires that underlying risk factors such as smoking, excessive alcohol consumption, and unhealthy diets be addressed at a societal level through public health efforts and an individual level between doctor and patient. The prevalence and nature of NCD requires that multiple sectors of healthcare come together to provide patient support, but it is family medicine physicians who are best suited to be on the front lines of this fight. A primary care-based model for treating NCD is supported by the World Health Organization. WHO supports this model because primary care physicians are better situated to diagnose NCD in their early stages and provide long term care and because an insufficient number of specialists are available to address disease management. It is imperative that Asia Pacific and Oceania countries empower their primary care physicians with the tools and training they need to diagnose, treat, and address the noncommunicable diseases they encounter on a daily basis in their communities.
