An investigator is interested in knowing whether a novel diet can help women lose
weight. She conducts a randomized clinical trial over a period of 5 months to test
whether the diet works. Five hundred women are randomized to receive the new
diet (treatment) and five hundred are randomized to continue with their own diet
(control). Weight in pounds is recorded at baseline (visit number 1) and at the
beginning of every subsequent month for the next 4 months. The investigator wants
to know whether the new diet will affect one’s weight over time differently for those on
the new diet versus those not receiving the new diet.
