Hello, and thank you in advance for your attention to my dilemma.
We are a Canadian based Grandfather Clock and parts company that was operating on a very old (10years+) version of OS Commerce. We sell equally between Canada and the US, and on a smaller scale, globally as well. We need both USD and CAD to operate as the majority of inventory we purchase comes from the US and Europe. The dilemma we have now, is that we wanted to move from our old open source site as the site is too old to have many modern upgrades implemented. In contemplating this change, we decided it was easier to go with an all in one cart like Big Commerce, that has a staff and will do automatic updates etc. for their sites. We felt the task of having to upgrade on the open source was too much for us to handle, and the idea of Big Commerce appealed to us in that they would migrate all our products and options (we have several hundred) and all we would do is tweak the rest. Well, I ended up taking a stock template, and customizing it heavily. It took a lot of time and effort but in the end I was thrilled with the result. I made my needs known for multi currency checkout before signing on with Big Commerce, and was assured they offered what I needed, only to find out months later after all my hard work and designing the new site, that they did not offer true multi currency functionality. Instead, customers are only able to see the currency conversion on the website, but once they check out, they can only check out in the ONE default currency set on the website.
THIS is where the problem is, and does not work for me. I need to be able to accept funds in both Canadian Dollar and US Dollar as I need the US funds to make my inventory purchases, most of which are outside of Canada, in the US and Europe. My customer base is generally elderly. They are not very good with computers for the most part, and they are also not open to seeing currency conversions on their credit cards. My Canadian customers also would not appreciate having to pay USD when purchasing from a Canadian company. I have reached out to Big Commerce, and they have tried, but cannot offer me any solution. They say it will be 12-18 months before they plan on implementing any kind of multi currency checkout facility. I have also reached out to 3rd party developers that have not been able to help either. The only one that had a solution was way too expensive for me. We are a small company, and they were proposing an integration system meant for much larger companies at $50,000 - an impossibility for me.
So, I remain in a very bad position, and I don't know what to do. I can't afford to keep paying premiums every month for a site I cannot launch, while also maintaining my old site and its monthly premuims. My last resort is to go elsewhere because I won't be able to pick my new site up and just set it down somewhere else. I don't have the time and money to spend customizing it all over again. I am hoping someone will be able to come up with a viable solution that can be used with my Big Commerce cart.
Essentially, the type of thing I am looking for, is a way for my Canadian customer to be able to check out in Canadian funds, and my US customer to be able to check out in US funds. That way, my customers are happy, and I will also have both currencies coming in with which to pay my inventory expenses. The exchange rate between Canada and US is very bad for Canadians now, so I would lose a lot of money if I had to convert money to US every time I wanted to make a purchase in the US.
One other important info is that my Merchant that processes my credit card transactions is PayPal. I use their Payflow Payments Pro gateway, and I know this is compatible with multi currency as my first step was PayPal, and they referred me to Big Commerce. I do have a separate CAD and USD PayPal account that my funds settle into when a customer makes a purchase. The way I am able to do this right now is by processing the transactions manually because I use Virtual Terminal with PayPal. The problem is, once I switch only to Big Commerce, when orders come in, the payment info won't be visible for me to be able to process manually, so this is why I need some kind of coding, or add on to enable the customer to pay in their home currency. PayPal has informed me that they have no issue making this happen, and that the shortcoming is with Big Commerce's set up.
Would there be something that can be done, like a piece of code for the checkout page, that might be able to have two buttons for checkout. One could be Canadian Customers Click Here to Check Out, and the other would be US and Interntational Customers, click here to check out.
I thank you all for reading this, and hope someone will be able to come up with a reasonably priced solution. I have no idea on the cost of something like this, so I didn't know what to select for budget and left the default small project price checked off. All I can say is that we are two people running this company, and budget is not extensive.
Please see links for both my current/old site [login to view URL], and my new site that is not launched as of yet. https://[login to view URL]
The new store is currently paused, meaning it cannot be accessed from the store front for sales.
Looking forward to any ideas for a solution.
