What;s the size of data which needs to be backed up. Please note:- As you had lost your /var directory it would not be possible to get your mysql data. Do you have backup of it, so that it can be restored after server reinstall. Was you using any web panel on the server or was having only ssh access. I am expertise in booting issues. Whenever their is booting issue, there are several things required behind it. For eg: Creating backup of existing data. Fix the issue. Boot the machine. If there is no chance of booting the machine, then re-installing the machine with creating the backup is the only option.
