Data-entry Website Mockup - Design the Look-and-Feel

This project is to design a modern and appealing look-and-feel for a website (web portal) that will primarily be used for adding, updating and deleting data records in an environment with large volumes of diverse and complex data (customers, orders, shipments, invoices, tracking, etc.). This project is NOT building a website. It is designing sample pages that will serve as the template for a website. This project is NOT about designing websites such as store fronts, marketing sites, corporate homepages, high graphic-content sites, etc. This project is NOT about mobile. The design must cater for a site that will be used on corporate desktops where most users have multiple monitors and wish to see as much data as possible using all available screen real-estate. The following is an example of the types of design issues that require consideration. Imagine a screen that allows a user to input invoices: - Do we show a list of invoices with hyperlinks on each line item which navigates to a new page with the invoice details? Or do we allow editing directly in the list? Or do we split the screen into a region for the list and a region for the details, and when you select a record in the grid, it loads the details? Or do we implement a “windowed” environment where multiple invoice detail screens can be opened up? - How do we search for invoices? Is there a single, generic Google-like search field, or do we have specific search fields? Are the search fields always visible, or do they animate into place as you mouse-over a specific region, to save screen space? - How to we show the list of invoices? In row and column form, or multiple rows each laid out as a mini-form? Or in blocks, both side by side and below each other? - How to we navigate from an invoice to something that is related (e.g. the Customer)? There could be many related things we want to navigate to. Do we have a links on the invoice form, or a hidden section that animates into view with all the related places you can navigate to? Can you only navigate from an “opened” invoice form, or can you navigate from the list? - How to we perform actions on the invoice, like “Post” or “Print”? Only from an “opened” invoice form, or the list, or both? - What if we want to perform an action on multiple invoices? - How to we display the individual items within an invoice? Do we repeat the paradigm and have a nested list of invoice lines, and from there we navigate to an invoice-line screen/window/section? Suppose each line is for a specific product. Would it be better to have two boxes “Available products” and “Selected Products” and you drag-and-drop between the two? Or a list of all available products with a checkbox or quantity field next to each? - How to the overall menus work, to navigate to different screens?
