Business categories are wacky. There are many different sets of them whether it's SIC, NAICS or more casual categories like on Yelp, Google, Factual and other sites. We have a data of businesses with only 4 digit SIC categories. We do not want to launch our product with SIC categories and we want a more friendly, casual business category base. Here's what we need: 1) A master business category list with a main category and a subset category. For example, 'Arts & Entertainment' and then 'Museums' or 'Zoos' or 'Gambling' etc. Another example could be 'Healthcare' and then a subset of either 'nursing home' or 'chiropractors' etc. This list needs to be simple, easy to understand for the consumer and exhaustive. There shouldn't be unneeded categories but at the same time there shouldn't be extra categories that waste space/attention. You can get ideas for this using the business categories I've attached from other sites. None of these made it great and don't have it broken down well. You should figure out which does it best and bring some parts together to make it a great list that makes sense. 2) Once this master business category list is completed then you will need to create 'likely searched words/phrases' that people will input trying to find that business category. I've attached a document with 4 different set of business categories of which one of them has this mostly done. This should give you an idea for it and I'm sure you can use most of it. For ex for the 'Japanese Restaurant' business category it'll have 'sashimi, hand rolls, all you can eat, sushi, tokyo, wasabi, all you can eat, sushi, tokyo, wasabi' 3) A conversion of our 1,004 SIC Code business category list (attached) to the categories above. We understand that there might be a lot of categories that wouldn't translate from SIC perfectly and there will be many categories in the new 'master business category list' which would be empty. For example SIC Codes only get specific as 'Eating Places' which is SIC Code 5812. So even though our master category list will have specific types of restaurants (Japanese, Chinese, Korean, Russian, etc) there would be no way to convert it to a specific one so it'll convert to a main category of 'Restaurants' or 'Food & Beverage' depending on the 'master category list' you create.
