Hello! What do you want as result? only the sketch and help to build the device locally? Bluetooth would be much cheaper of course but it will need you to pair it with the module. How precise you need the detection to be? My idea is: You can use a very cheap ethernet shield ($9 usd in ebay) + your home router, open your router status and list the attached mac devices (and probably the "power" of the wifi signal from the router's webpage).

Hi, I've worked on several Arduino based projects, including a quadrotor, and have worked with Bluetooth modules as well, when I was making the controller of the above said quadrotor. I think your request is fairly straightforward, and I'd love to discuss it further with you. My proposal to accomplish this is simple: it will be always discoverable, and should your iPhone come within range of it, your iPhone can send it a message to activate it.
