Problem 1. The wood commercial building shown in Figure P1-a carries a service dead load of 26 psf (includes the weight of the wall for lateral load calculations). The wind pressure is 32 psf applied in a distance 2a = 8 ft and 24 psf in the rest of the wall. The relevant seismic parameters are: I = 1.0, S1 = 0.469g, SM1 = 0.722g and SMS = 1.904g. Use wood structural panel sheathing (structural I grade) for the shear walls. The framing will be Southern Pine. Assume the weight of the partitions as 15 psf and use only ¾ of all available dead loads to resist uplift. a) Design the roof diaphragm and complete the information in Figure P1-a which shows a cut at the roof line and Figure P1-b (chord splice). Provide all the necessary calculations to verify the adequacy of the connections for lateral loads. b) Design the interior shear wall B (wall panel sheathing thickness, nailing, sill bolting, regular studs and boundary studs, and hold down force. Complete the information in Figure P1-c. c) For the north wall, calculate the strut forces. Show location and magnitude of maximum drag force. Is the drag force smaller or larger than the chord force?
