I have a small home network set up with 1 to 1 NAT. That network includes a web server on the local side. I have a static IP from internet provider. Web server works perfectly, and I am happy with network, except that machines on local LAN see the local IP for the web server. I need to be able to access the web server from my local LAN, but through the public IP address. My understanding is that this is called hairpinning or reflection. I have been told it is possible to add a static routing statement that will allow me to do this, without making any other changes to router config.
I need someone to look at my config (I can provide as text file) and:
1. Tell me if this is indeed possible, and if it is:
2. Write that statement and let me know where in the config file it goes. That's it!
I intend to eventually replace my 1841 with and ASA 5505 (or use both), but for now I just need to work on my own web server as if I were outside the local LAN. Just looking for quick, inexpensive, and successful. Perhaps much more work down the road, but not today.
High! I think that the solution is to use dns doctoring. Also there is another possible solution with nat but it is too complex and need to change current nat configuration. The first solution is to substitute external ip, which you get on dns request by local ip of your server. More simple way is to use file hosts on your computer. I have done such job here on asa 5505.

Hi,
glad to help you with this project.
I'm a Cisco certified network professional in routing&switching and security with more than 7 years experience with strong background in Cisco technologies.
The answer to you question is yes you can do that.
We can start right now if you have the time.
Thank you.
Best regards
Hi youngpatriot,
I've read your requirements and unfortunately what you're trying to do is possible only in the following scenarios:
- DNS Doctoring: This is a function that the ASA is capable of.
- Internal DNS Server: Your website name would resolve to the private IP address while you're connected internally if you reference your internal DNS server in either DHCP or static IP address assignment.
- Host file: You can change the "hosts" file on your windows machine to map the web site to the private address. This becomes a problem of having to remove or comment-out the host entry when you're outside your network, though.
Otherwise you're going to run into many problems trying to accomplish this with routing and such on your 1841, and I'm afraid it'll never work without caveats. You may want to expedite your decision to implement an ASA, the DNS doctoring function was designed for exactly this scenario.
Please don't hesitate to reach out to me if you have any questions or require clarification.
Kind Regards,
Kevin Sheahan

Dear Hirer,
I'm a Cisco certified network engineer (CCNA Security, CCNP R&S) with 4 years of experience working in an ISP company.
You need to add a static NAT entry in the router to be able to access to the WEB server from the outside.
I think I can be helpful for you.
