Bacula is an open source backup solution and it support plugins. This would ease the backup and restore of VMWARE Virtual Machines. It's fine you can do all operations throug Bacula CLI and file (.conf) plugin configuration, if needed. Compression is not required Compatibility Matrix: - Bacula 7.0.5 Server on Debian 8, CentOS 7. - Vmware ESXI 5.x - 6.x - VADP API Features: - Online back up of VM(s) - Support for multiple VMDK disk(s) backup per VM - Option: Only valid VMDK(s) presented to the VM will be backed up - Fully support VMDK(s) stored across multiple datastores - Ability to include/exclude specific VMDK(s) per VM - Clientless backup of VMWARE Esxi virtual machines disks (vmkd) and configurations. - Hability to choose what VM will be backuped. - Incremental virtual machine image backup using change block tracking - Full virtual machine image restore - Incremental virtual machine image restore - Support changing custom VM name during restore

Hello I am a software developer working in storage domain on software side, where my work is exactly same, although, we have written our own C++ wrapper for VMWARE backup using VMDK api's. I have gone through your requirement and I believe I would complete this task. As you have mentioned, you are okay to use bacula, job would become little easy.
