The research paper must be approximately eight to twelve (8-12) pages in length excluding notes and bibliography (12,000-15000). The research paper is designed to allow students to explore, in greater detail, any area of interest that falls broadly under the scope of international security. You can choose one from topics provided below, and then explore the topic using examples from the real world. You don’t have to follow suggested titles – just indicate the area of interests (Example 1: Food security in Balkans (topic 1); Example 2: Sources of conflict in contemporary Latin America (topic 9)) Proposed areas for research paper: 1. The global food problems - regional solutions 2. Challenges for economic security in the twenty-first century 3. Globalization of defence trade 4. Mechanisms for resolving regional disputes 5. Technology and modern security 6. Environmental security 7. Private actors in global and regional security environment 8. Origins of terrorism 9. Sources and role of strategic culture Ensure that the topic is not too broad. You must also justify why your topic is important given the extent of the available literature. The paper should not merely synthesize the available literature on a given topic. It must pose a question about your chosen topic as narrowly as possible. Avoid overly descriptive or historical questions. It is important to have a preliminary hypothesis to focus your argument and line of inquiry or to reveal problems regarding the extent to which your question can be operationalized. Very important: You must provide definitions of key or contested terms. These definitions can be borrowed from the literature or you may wish, in some circumstances, to derive your own. Your paper should include an outline or “road map” of how you intend to pursue and structure your line of inquiry. If you observe ppt presentations during the class, I always present the structure/outline, then move towards definitions, questions, and doubts. You should identify the types of sources or evidence that you will rely upon and acknowledge their potential gaps or limitations. The bibliography should incorporate sources from both the course reading list and those that you have found on your own.
