Microbiology is the study of organisms that are too small to be seen by the naked eye. Uses for microbiology include medicinal purposes, production of food substances and degradation of toxic waste.

The study of pathogens is incredibly important in healthcare. A pathogen may be a virus, bacteria, fungus or any other microorganism that can cause disease. Studying these microorganisms allows biologists to understand the processes involved in the disease and to form a counter treatment. Microbiology studies the microorganism itself, while pathology is concerned with the disease itself.

Bacteria may be used in the industrial production of amino acids, and bacteria and fungi may be used for industrial fermentation. Acetic acid, citric acid and ethanol are all produced by fermentation.
