     Not gonna lie, it's kinda disappointing. Given the correct description, artists here could've had the time to change their work to something closer to what the winning entry was and not worked on what they were lead to believe. On the other hand, it remains the contest holder's prerogative to chose whoever they want so what can we do, right? Can't get your time and effort back.

     What will be the end use of the design? T-shirt? tattoo? print? I'm asking cos the design style would need to change depending on the medium on which it is meant to be displayed, which is upto you.
